CIAC HOSTS INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH VISIT

Majane Silveira, Masters student in Comparative Studies – Literature and Other Arts at Universidade Alberta, is currently on a research visit at CIAC-UAlg until the end of February 2023. Majane Silveira intends, during her stay, to focus on the narrative of testimony and its inter-semiotic transposition into comics.

Majane Silveira holds a degree in Social Communication (PUCRS, Brazil) and a post-graduate degree in Graphic Expression (PUCRS). Working for both the advertising and publishing markets, her career has always been focused on illustration. She has worked for the magazines Contra Relógio, Criativa, Época/SP, Saúde, Ciência Hoje, and the newspaper Folha de São Paulo, among others. She has also taught drawing workshops in Brazil, Canada, and Portugal.

In 2018, Majane began to express herself through comics: she created Umas Potocas, which brings together small graphic narratives dedicated to contemporary issues that reside in the simplicity and complexity of everyday life. This project has already been presented in events such as CCXP Worlds (São Paulo, 2020), Banca de Quadrinistas of Itaú Cultural (São Paulo, 2020), CCXP19 (São Paulo, 2019), CCXP18 (São Paulo, 2018), Pixel Show (São Paulo, 2018), Des.gráfica (São Paulo, 2018), Noa Noa (Porto Alegre, 2018), Papelera (Porto Alegre, 2018), Bienal de Quadrinhos (Curitiba, 2018). In addition, the researcher has released three comic publications: Café bem tomado (2018), Half a dose of Cancan (2018) and Cura (2019).

Her academic research work is focused on narrative voices, diaristic writing, testimonial narrative, narrative discourse, narratology, comics, and graphic expression. Majane Silveira seeks, in this investigative stay, to analyze diaristic writing and, comparatively, to identify how narrative voices present themselves in comic book adaptations. Besides the bibliographical survey for her dissertation and the production of articles, the researcher intends to experience the creative process of diaristic writing addressed in the research, from which she is developing a comic project. The academic and artistic production will be sensitized by her interaction with CIAC, as well as by living in the city of Faro.
