OBSERVATORY OF AUDIOVISUAL QUALITY
The Observatory of Audiovisual quality was created in 2013 to provide room for debate and production of experimental content based on the curatorship, analysis, and criticism of contemporary audiovisual production (especially Brazilian and Portuguese) for television, the internet, and other platforms. In 2022, the project will be carried out through a partnership between CIAC (University of Algarve) and the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (Brazil).
The Observatory’s primary focus is to bring to discussion the concepts of audiovisual quality and media literacy. The Observatory curates creative content which offers distinguished experiences for/with the public to develop a repertory of good practices in the audiovisual environment that acts as a cultural, audiovisual, and bibliographic reference. Therefore, it aims to promote the development of media literacy, which is essential in contemporary society due to the relevance that the media have gained in the intermediation of social relations.
The project’s relevance is also evident in its interdisciplinarity, since it aims to aggregate various social agents to discuss this problem. For that, it seeks to organize a network of researchers, producers, educators, and other cultural agents and civil society organizations to generate and promote their activities. It also intends to broaden the debate with schools and the professional communication market. To achieve this goal, the project prepares students in the fields of Communication, Design, Arts, and education—not only so that they become familiar with scientific research methods and their application through extension activities, but also to promote a critical and autonomous education that reflects on their future professional practice and the shaping of active citizens in the society of which they are part of.
The Observatory of Audiovisual quality is coordinated by Gabriela Borges (CIAC), Letícia Barbosa (UFJF), and Daiana Sigiliano (UFJF).
