CALL FOR PAPERS

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR ROTURA MAGAZINE RUNNING UNTIL THE 30TH OF APRIL

The submission period for articles for the fourth issue of Rotura – Communication, Culture and Arts Journal, from CIAC, is officially open. Under the theme “Silent Cinemas in Portugal”, the thematic dossier aims to contribute to the updating of studies related to the silent film period and to launch new clues for a historiographical practice around cinema in Portugal. The call for papers runs until April 30, 2022.

The call for papers launched by Rotura magazine accepts original articles that address the following topics: film exhibition spaces in the time of silent cinema; unique experiences of sound in exhibition (for example, the spoken tapes, musical accompaniment); production models in silent cinema; silent cinema in the Portuguese press (for example, the emergence of specialized magazines and commercial dissemination in the non-specialized press); the critical reception of silent cinema in the transition from silent to sound; women in Portuguese silent cinema; foreign contributions to Portuguese silent cinema (for example, directors such as Maurice Mariaud); the distribution of silent cinema in Portugal; restoration and digitalization of silent cinema in Portugal. Articles may be written in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

Despite the meritorious pioneering work of Manuel Felix Ribeiro, António Horta e Costa or Fernando Duarte, and more recent works published by António Ferreira, José de Matos-Cruz or Tiago Baptista, the silent film period (1895-1930) is one of the least studied in the history of cinema in Portugal. The chronological distance, the chronic difficulty in accessing sources, or even their disappearance, have been the main obstacles to a more regular and comprehensive historiographical practice on the period, usually very focused on the expository narrative about the stylistics of the films and their authors (namely the directors), which devalues or ignores contextual aspects such as the economy or the socio-cultural framework.

In addition, submissions for the Rotura magazine’s “Varia” dossier are permanently open. Articles on topics related to communication, culture and the arts are accepted at any time.
