CIAC RESEARCHERS TAKE PART IN THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE FESTIVAL FICA

From 12 to 16 October 2022, CIAC researchers take part in the FICA-International Science Festival in Oeiras (Portugal). The event includes debates, concerts, workshops, presentations, and interactive exhibitions to inspire and stimulate curious minds. CIAC researchers that will take part in this event are Susana Costa, Vasco Ramalho, Rui Travasso, and Ana Perfeito (PhD students in Digital Media-Art and CIAC collaborators), as well as Pedro Alves da Veiga (Professor and researcher at CIAC).

On October 12, Susana Costa presents [IN] the Hate Booth: a counter-narrative to hate speech to school groups. This installation has a physical and virtual dimension and is composed of a light booth where one can find an interactive fiction game. The player assumes the role of investigator. The game starts with a scheme of written clues that are inspired by the video game universe.

On October 15, the art installation Alentejo — Sonho Lúcido 2022, by researcher Ana Perfeito, will be presented at the festival. The installation is an interactive video art projection in which the character manipulates (through motion sensors) the elements of the narrative, graphic effects of the projection, and audio. Conceptually it represents the idea of a lucid dream (a dream that can be manipulated by the dreamer) with the theme of Alentejo’s countryside, its landscape, and culture. The work intends to raise awareness about the preservation of the Alentejo region.

On October 16, at 21h00, Vasco Ramalho (in partnership with Rui dOrey) presents (IN) MarImmersive Waves, inspired by one of the most precious elements of nature to human life—water. The name [IN]MarImmersive Waves results from a fusion between the words Marimba and Immersive. The creator is a key part of this artifact, which he integrates as a performer. Real-time generative art is activated through movement.

Also, on October 16, at 21h30, Rui Travasso presents MAD Clarinet, an art installation/performance constructed with a clarinet manipulated with digital media art, as well as its technical and conceptual functioning. This will be a sound and visual journey that offers the audience a sensorial journey. In short, this work uses the connection between the instrumentalist of traditional instruments and digital media-art in an individual multidisciplinary exploration that goes beyond the Arts field and is complemented by the interdisciplinary collaboration between the authors.

In addition, on the 15th and 16th of October, professor Pedro Alves da Veiga makes his contribution to the festival with the artistic installation SAR-SPECIESISM / AGEISM / RACISM. This is a participatory video-art work inspired by totemism, tribal cultures, and handmade masks. SAR is based on the concepts of “loop” and metric editing, where images and sounds are created in real-time – or captured for video, without post-edition or production. It is also based on postcolonial theory, feminist and anti-discriminatory studies, and animal rights advocacy. SAR uses portraits donated by various participants, which are then deconstructed in order to prevent the identification of species, age, race, gender, or sexual orientation. Its fruition aims at a disruptive aesthetic appreciation, which confronts speciesism, age prejudice, and racism.

FICA-International Science Festival takes place at Hub-ACT (Art, Science & Technology), a future Incubation Center for creative industries, in Porto Salvo. The Festival brings together more than 100 academic, scientific, technological, diplomatic, governmental and non-governmental entities, offering thousands of activities planned around important scientific topics.
