CIAC SUPPORTS CONFERENCE ON ‘HISTORY OF LANGUAGE TEACHING’

Between 28 and 30 June 2023, the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS) of the University of Algarve organizes, the International Interassociations Conference on History of Language Teaching, which will take place at Amphitheater Teresa Gamito, in the FCHS building of the UAlg Campus Gambelas. CIAC researchers Ana Clara Santos, Neuza Costa, Olívia Novoa Fernández, Joaquim Guerra, and Ana Alexandra Carvalho will give their contribution to the conference.

The event aims to highlight the history of the field and bring a new light to a historical and comparative perspective on the operational modalities about the pedagogical action of the figure of those who were in charge of teaching modern/foreign languages. It also intends to deepen the knowledge about pedagogical practices promoted by actors (tutors, educators, or language teachers) who employ different training models and knowledge acquired throughout their career within the educational system, questioning the status and profile of these educational actors, also taking into account the training and pedagogical monitoring of teachers as well as the dissemination mechanisms of educational reforms and ministerial or other instructions.

This conference is being hosted by UAlg for the second time and has the support of the International Network of Associations and Research Centers in the Field of History of Teaching of Modern/Foreign languages, which is composed by Associação Portuguesa para a História do Ensino das Línguas e Literaturas Estrangeiras (APHELLE), Centro Interuniversitario di Ricerca sulla Storia degli Insegnamenti Linguistici (CIRSIL), Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas, Sociedad Española de Historiografía Lingüística (SEHL), and Société Internationale pour l’Histoire du Français Langue Etrangère ou Seconde (SIHFLES).

In addition to CIAC, the conference is co-organized by Centro de Estudos em Letras (CEL/UTAD), Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Franceses (APEF), Associação Portuguesa de Professores de Línguas Estrangeiras do Ensino Superior (APROLINGUAS), and AILA Research Network on History of Language Learning and Teaching (HoLLT.net).
