NEW PUBLICATION
NEW PUBLICATION ABOUT THE HISTORY OF CINEMA INCLUDES ARTICLES BY MIRIAN TAVARES AND ANTÓNIO COSTA VALENTE
The volume História do Cinema – Dos primórdios ao cinema contemporâneo [History of Cinema – From the Beginnings to Contemporary Cinema], coordinated by Nelson Araújo, has the collaboration of 19 researchers, including CIAC coordinator Mirian Tavares and CIAC researcher António Costa Valente. Recently published by Edições 70, this is a book that extracts, from multiple authorial perspectives, the moments, movements, films and protagonists of the history of cinema.
The article “Cinema e vanguardas: entre o encantamento e o desencanto” [“Cinema and the avant-garde: between enchantment and disenchantment”], by Mirian Tavares, traces the artistic singularity of the pre-sound cinema, manifesting the importance of the Futurist manifestos. The trail of enchantment with a fruitful period built on experimental freedom ends up giving way to disenchantment in a filmic label standardized by a programmatic realist-naturalist tendency.
António Costa Valente, in “Ásia, um vasto histórico cinematográfico” [“Asia, a vast cinematographic history”], topographies an unrestrained filmic study, assuming his western look in a methodological posture that absorbs national histories and the brilliance of works and directors distinguished at the Oscars and Cannes Festival. There are defined four axes of gravity (the Japanese school, the cinema of China, the cinema of Korea, and the cinema of India), in a theoretical elaboration that particularizes artistic flair and identifies collective tensions.
The diachronic organization of Cinema History – From the Beginnings to Contemporary Cinema allows us to “zoom in” on the dialectics of cinematographic language and potentiates the immersion from the particular to the global.
