ARTICLE BY SUSANA COSTA PUBLISHED IN MAGAZINE BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION

“The Role of Games and Gamification in Countering Online Hate Speech,” an article by researcher Susana Costa from CIAC, has recently been published in Spotlight, a magazine of the Radicalization Awareness Network (RAN), a network of the European Commission.

The article is part of the researcher’s doctoral project and is integrated into the PROPS project, hosted by the Center for Research in Arts and Communication (CIAC) and funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).

With the aim of sharing intermediate results from various research projects conducted at CIAC in the field of hate speech, this article, now published in this European initiative, examines the potential of games and gamification as powerful tools in combating online hatred, addressing issues such as misogyny, racism, radicalization, anti-Semitism, homophobia, xenophobia, cyberbullying, and discrimination.

Spotlight is a quarterly magazine targeting the RAN’s network of practitioners. Each edition covers different topics, ranging from mental health to violent extremism. The magazine was commissioned by the European Commission and prepared by REOC Communications on behalf of RadarEurope. This edition delves into the phenomenon of radicalization in games and related platforms, the use of gamified techniques, digital recruitment tactics, and the opportunity to employ games in addressing online social problems. The publication features a series of original articles and case studies dedicated to the use of gaming techniques to counter radicalization.
