OLIVIA NOVOA FERNÁNDEZ TEACHES AN OPEN LECTURE AT UNIVERSITY OF MINHO
On 10 November 2022, at 16h00, CIAC researcher Olivia Novoa Fernández teachers an open lecture at University of Minho (room CP1 – 2.23). The lecture discusses “Noticiários enlatados: as relações com Espanha no cinema informativo português (1938-1977)“. This talk is an initiative endorsed by CEHUM and offered in the scope of the discipline of Intercultural Representations as part of the Degree in Cultural Studies.
The topic stems from Olivia’s doctorate thesis (defended in 2019 and mentored by Mirian Tavares). The thesis is a study of the use of cinematographic newscasts as a propaganda instrument during the Iberian dictatorships (Franco and Salazar). Cinematographic newscasts have been used to control information and indoctrinate societies with the regimes’ values and dogmas. Nowadays, these records are a valuable testimony of the recent past and sources for its research. In this study, Olivia Novoa Fernández has analyzed Spain’s representation and its relationship with Portugal. She has highlighted the main propaganda slogan that surrounded the newscasts at the time: friendship, fraternity, and peninsular solidarity.
