SERIES OF CONFERENCES

‘ALMA PROJECT’ CONFERENCE SERIES IS BACK, WITH GUESTS ELZA CATALDO AND MIGUEL PINHEIRO
On 30 September 2022, at 18h00 pm (Lisbon time), the project ALMA – Antropofagia, Literatura, Modernismo e Audiovisual [ALMA-Anthropophagy, literature, modernism and Audiovisual] promotes the Fourth of a Series of Conferences dedicated to the anthropophagic idea. The round table “Olhares contemporâneos sobre a história a partir do filme As Órfãs da Rainha” [Contemporary views on the history stemming from the movie ‘The Queen’s orphans'”, includes the participation of Elza Cataldo (Brazilian director, producer and screenwriter) and Miguel Pinheiro (Portuguese actor, photographer and director); and moderation by Pedro Varoni (UFSCar) and Jorge Carrega (CIAC). This session takes place online and is broadcast on CIAC’s Youtube channel.
The movie The Queen’s orphans, by Elza Cataldo, returns to the sixteenth century, the early days of Portuguese colonization in Brazil. It consists of a feature film with the participation of the characters’ consultant, Miguel Pinheiro. At present, the movie is in pre-release phase.
The series of conferences runs until November 2022 and brings together writers, filmmakers, artists, and academics from Brazil, Portugal, and Angola to reflect on the idea of Anthropophagy as a key to understanding contemporary topics that transcend issues of national identity and refer to cultural relations between Portugal and the former colonies, Brazil and Africa.
Additional sessions scheduled: “Autoficção na obra de Leonardo Mouramateus” [Autofiction in the work of Leonardo Mouramateus] (October 28), with Mirian Tavares (CIAC/UAlg) and Patrícia Dourado (CIAC/UAlg); and “Antropofagias tecnológicas” [Technological Anthropophagies] (November 25), with directors Isael Maxacali and Charles Bicalho.
The project ALMA-Anthropophagy, literature, modernism and audiovisual is the result of a partnership between Labor – Laboratório de Estudos do Discurso (Federal Universidade de São Carlos – Brazil), CIAC – Research Center in Arts and Communication (University of Algarve – Portugal), UEMG – Universidade Estadual de Minas Gerais (Brazil) and Polo Audiovisual da Zona da Mata. The project’s team is constituted of Miriam Tavares and Jorge Carrega (CIAC/UAlg); César Piva (Polo Audiovisual da Zona da Mata); Vanice Sargentini, Daniel Laks, Pedro Henrique Varoni De Carvalho and Rodolfo Magalhães (UFSCar); and Cláudio Santos Rodrigues (Universidade do Estado de Minas Gerais).

About the guest speakers:
Elza Cataldo is a director, producer, and screenwriter. Her feature and short films have been awarded at festivals in Brazil and around the world. Elza Cataldo holds a degree in cinematography from the University of Nanterre and a PhD from Paris 5 University, Sorbonne (France). She has also been a professor and researcher at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. In her work, Elza Cataldo turns her gaze to the presence and protagonism of women in Brazil’s history—which is often neglected in historical records. Her most recent production, The Queen’s orphans (2022), narrates the story of three Portuguese sisters forced to leave their country and head to Brazil with the mission of populating the new world; all of this in the midst of the sixteenth-century inquisition.
Miguel Pinheiro began his scientific career in Portugal and later moved to London to pursue a master’s degree in communication. Nowadays, he runs a production and consulting company in Amazon’s rainforest, uniting technical and management skills with the local knowledge of the people in the region. As a creator of new projects in Amazon, his multimedia artifacts (emphasizing sustainability, bioeconomy, blockchain, carbon markets, biodiversity, and traditional cultures) have been published in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. As an award-winning filmmaker and visual artist, his work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions. As an actor, his path includes three continents and five languages.
