JORGE CARREGA PARTICIPATES IN THE XII ANNUAL MEETING OF THE ASSOCIATION OF MOVING IMAGE
CIAC researcher Jorge Carrega is part of the “Cinema em Português” panel of the XII AIM Annual Meeting with the communication “The cinematographic exhibitions in Faro in the first half of the 1950s”.
About his intervention, Jorge Carrega states that since the first exhibition of the animatographer, on September 11, 1898, the city of Faro embraced the cinema, which quickly became a popular entertainment and transversal to all social classes. Taking as a case study the year 1953, this communication intends to draw a picture of the cinematographic exhibition in the Algarve capital, during the first half of the 50s. This period was marked by profound socio-economic transformations – during which cinema assumed primacy as a public spectacle – and coincided with the flourishing of cinema produced in Mediterranean Europe, which translated into an important presence in Portuguese cinemas.
Using the regional press as the main documental source, Carrega identifies exhibition spaces and analyzes films exhibited in Faro, in order to better understand how exhibition and cinematographic reception in the Algarve capital took place, during the first half of the 50s.
The XII AIM Annual Meeting will take place from May 30 to June 3, 2023, in a joint organization between AIM and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.
