CIAC RESEARCHER PARTICIPATES IN CONFERENCE ON CLASSICAL STUDIES

Researcher Adriana Nogueira travels to the Azores to participate in the V Jornadas de Estudos Clássicos, on 6 June 2023, in Ponta Delgada.

The V Jornadas de Estudos Clássicos take place from 5 to 7 June under the theme “War & Peace in the Ancient World”. The colloquium is part of project Artes docendi, from the Center for Classical Studies of the University of Coimbra, and is directed at a student audience of secondary and higher education. It aims to promote a taste for Classical Studies, through the approach of themes of the ancient world, as well as through the way these topics are manifested, or persist, in contemporaneity.

Adriana Nogueira presents the communication “(Im)balances of power in the Peloponnesian War”. With this presentation, Nogueira does not intend to explain the causes of the war, including those of our time, but rather “to find in the Peloponnesian War, as Thucydides told us in his story, the balances, and imbalances of power described there, which contribute to understanding the armed conflicts that, even today, are so present in our world.”

The intervention departs from the concepts of nature (physis) and law (nomos), to analyze the situations in which a balance is maintained between the parts and those that lead to imbalance. The researcher will analyze the effectiveness of the arguments of both sides and how they are or are not met, especially when there is a conflict of interest.
