CIAC researcher Rui Sanches opens collective exhibition

Backstories brings together works by the sculptor Rui Sanches, by Pedro Calapez and by Mitsuo Miura, under the challenge of an encounter with the work of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. According to Ana Ruivo, this isn’t a conjunction based on existing pieces, but rather a process undertaken specifically for the moment, a project arising from dialogue between artists, around the primal theme of the Book and the Library, and of the incorporation of the subject in the research developed by Vieira da Silva as visual material capable of handling the concepts of space and time, reality and memory, affection and action, identity and history. That’s why among exhibition galleries, we find “Bibliothèque en feu” (1974), an iconic piece of the painter’s research, a visual labyrinth of intertwined spaces, books, spines and letters, escape routes in apparent luminescence.

The exhibition opens on May 24, at 6:30 pm at the Arpad Szenes – Vieira da Silva Museum, in Lisbon and is open to the public until September 25.
