Trem Gallery welcomes “3285 dias” [3285 days] in honour of the Visual Arts Course of UAlg
The exhibition “3285 dias”, organised by the professors/artists of the Visual Arts Course to pay homage to the degree course started at the University of Algarve precisely nine years ago, opens on January 22, at 6:30 p.m., at the Trem Gallery, in Faro.
As drawing is the founding expression of plastic thought, and originator of an artistic practice, it is quite natural that this be the medium chosen by the professors/artists of the Visual Arts Course of the University of the Algarve for this exhibition.The exhibition, which runs until April 04, can be viewed from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
About the artists:
Xana (Lisbon, 1959) gained a degree in Fine Arts from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts in Lisbon in 1984, the same year in which he started living in Lagos, in the Algarve. He is co-author of the Visual Arts degree project, of the University of the Algarve, where he has been a guest professor since 2004.
Since 1981, as a visual artist he has undertaken various exhibitions, scenographies and interventions in public spaces.
In 2005, Culturgest, in Lisbon, presented an anthological selection of his works.
Lately he has focused his artistic work on the creation of temporary public art installations/constructions. Highlights within this context include the construction, in 2009, of a large “Triumphal Arch” on the Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona. In 2010 he presented, in the gardens of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the installation “Assembleia”, as part of the “Res Publica” exhibition. From February to June 2012, his installation “Nova Assembleia e algumas próteses” appeared in the Chiado Museum and in the summer of the same year he built the sculptural intervention “Uma Casa no Céu” [A House in the Sky] Vila Nova da Barquinha sculpture park. In 2013, he created the “Amor Libera Lux” installation as part of the “Vicente ’13” initiative in Belém, Lisbon.
Rui Sanches (Lisbon, 1954) studied at Goldsmiths College, London (BA 1980) and at Yale University, New Haven (MFA 1982). In 1984 he exhibited his work for the first time at the Gallery of Modern Art of the SNBA and at the Galeria Diferença in Lisbon. Since then he has held more than forty solo exhibitions, highlights of which include the retrospective exhibition at the CAM, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2001) and the exhibition “MUSEUM” at the National Museum of Ancient Art (2008), and he has taken part in dozens of collective exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. His work can be found in the main Portuguese public collections and in several foreign collections, including: CAM /C. Gulbenkian Foundation, Serralves Foundation, Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, the Estremadura and Ibero-American Museum of Contemporary Art, Badajoz, EDP Foundation, Luso-American Foundation for Development, Berardo Collection and Cachola Collection. He is a visiting assistant professor at the Visual Arts Course at the University of the Algarve. He was given the AICA-Ministry of Culture award in 2008.
Susana de Medeiros was born in Ponta Delgada (São Miguel, Azores). She currently lives in the Algarve. She has degrees in Law from the University of Coimbra and in Fines Arts from ESTGAD, now ESAD (Caldas da Rainha); she also has a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Nottingham Trent, having enjoyed a scholarship there as part of the European Lifelong Learning Programme – Erasmus/Socrates. In the area of dance and movement (contemporary) she has taken part in workshops given by Clara Andermatt, Madalena Victorino, Margarida Mestre, Vera Mantero, Sílvia Real and Helena Flôr Dias. She currently teaches in university education (at the University of the Algarve) and develops non-formal education projects in the areas of visual and performing arts, film and mediation and reading promotion. She is part of Xerem – a cultural association based in Lisbon. A multidisciplinary artist, highlights among the places where she has developed projects as a visual artist include: Cuenca (Spain), Maputo (Mozambique), Nottingham (England), New York (U.S.A.), St. Petersburg (Russia) and Portugal.
