EXHIBITION AT GALLERY TREM
GALLERY TREM HOSTS THE EXHIBITION “HOUSE/HOME” BY LUÍS MARQUES AND RÚBEN GONÇALVES
The opening of the exhibition “House/Home” takes place on November 23, 2023, at 18h00, at the Municipal Gallery Trem – Manuel Baptista in Faro. On display until February 7, 2024, the exhibition brings together works by Luís Marques and Rúben Gonçalves.
“Home/House” presents a group of paintings and site-specific sculpture-installations. The artists invite the public to reflect on the idea of “home” – from an ancestral perspective to the contemporary issues surrounding housing, including social problems. Having previously collaborated and curated various exhibitions together, the artists have selected works that best represent their journey and emphasize recurring themes in their ongoing work.
Luís Marques, a visual artist born in Faro and a graduate in Visual Arts from the University of Algarve, explores how humans project their own issues onto nature as a species in his artistic work. Themes of borders and the connection with the territory are common in his work. In the individual-territory connection, he utilizes memory by appropriating symbols from everyday present and past.
Highlighted exhibitions by Luís Marques include “Mudaram as Estações, Nada Mudou” at Casa do Meio-Dia (2021), participation in the Young Art Prize Carpe Diem and Millennium bcp Foundation (2022), and the XXII International Art Biennial of Cerveira (2022). Alongside his visual research, he has also been involved in production and curation projects for collective exhibitions with young artists since 2018. Currently, he exhibits and resides as an artist at Fábrica Moderna in Lisbon.
Rúben Gonçalves, as an artist, draws inspiration from his research and surroundings. In his work, he prioritizes an organic creative process over aesthetics or concept, but in recent investigations, especially in exhibitions like “A Linha de Água e o Desenho do Mar” and “Um Lugar Depois O Outro,” he has focused on conceptual issues.
His body of work predominantly involves drawing and painting, occasionally incorporating sculptures or installations. Exploring diverse themes from psychoanalysis to brief existential reflections, he holds a particular interest in the idea of death and purpose. His longer dimension drawings, self-described as “performative,” exhibit a representational gesturality of his “dance rituals.”
