ADRIANA NOGUEIRA TAKES PART IN THE 14TH CELTIC CONFERENCE IN CLASSICS

The 14th Celtic Conference in Classics takes place between 11 and 14 July 2023, at the University of Coimbra. CIAC researcher Adriana Nogueira will take part in the event with the communication “The reception of Hercules (and other myths) in the biography of Saint Anthony (tx XVII-XVIII)” part of the thematic panel “Classics in Hagiography”.

Her work deals with two classical manuscripts of a hagiographic text, “Hercules Divino (Santo) António Português”. In both the book and the manuscripts, Saint Anthony is compared to different characters of the classical historic period (gods, heroes, mythological and historical characters) and Christianity.

This communication discusses the attributes of Heracles / Hercules, examining which ones are chosen and how they are described, in order to contribute to the worship of the Saint (the final objective of these works), likewise analyzing other characters of Greco-Latin mythology or Christianity, whenever they are relevant to that end.

Since 1998 the Celtic Conference in Classics (CCC) has rotated among universities in Britain, France and Ireland. In 2017 the CCC expanded into Québec, Canada, and in 2019 to Portugal. The CCC includes upwards of 20 panels on broad topics in Classics (Greco-Roman history, philosophy, literature, archaeology, reception). The CCC invites scholars and students to discuss fundamental issues of Greco-Roman society and culture.
