CIAC IS PRESENT AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ARTSIT 2021

On the 2nd of December, at 10:30am, Susana Costa, one of the researchers of the Play Your Role project and a PhD student in Digital Media-Art, will present the paper “Tackling online hate speech? Play Your Role!” at the 10th EAI International Conference: ArtsIT, Interactivity & Game Creation. Organized by EAI – European Alliance for Innovation, this is a hybrid event that takes place on December 2nd and 3rd, in Karlsruhe (a UNESCO Media-Art creative city in Germany) and in online format.

The article, co-authored by CIAC coordinators Mirian Tavares and Bruno Mendes da Silva, analyzes methods to combat online hate speech through gamification and video games. Based on the project “Play Your Role: Gamification Against Hate Speech”, funded by the European Commission’s “Citizenship, Rights and Justice” program and related to UN Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), it presents a set of complementary and interrelated tools (such as online video games, fuzzy games and educational itineraries) to counteract online hate speech. It seeks to make the culture of games and networked social spheres a driver for the promotion of media literacy and digital citizenship.

The conference brings together researchers, practitioners, artists and academia to discuss the symbiosis between art and information technology and reflect on the impact of art and technology on sustainability, responsibility and human dignity. The event also focuses on advances in the areas of virtualization and artificial intelligence. ArtsIT has been taking a leading role as a scientific forum for the dissemination of research results at the intersection of art, science, culture, performing arts, media and technology.
