REVIEW OF OLIVIA NOVOA FERNÁNDEZ’S DOCTORATE THESIS INTEGRATES APPELE PUBLICATION

A review of Olivia Novoa Fernández’s doctorate thesis was recently published (October 2022) in the second volume of Boletim de APPELE (Portuguese Association of Spanish as a Foreign Language Professors). The thesis defence took place in 2019 and was mentored by CIAC coordinator Mirian Tavares.

Titled “Noticiarios enlatados: del rescate a la literacía de las imágenes referentes a España en el cine informativo portugués”, the review focuses on Novoa Fernández’s study on the use of cinematographic newscasts as a propaganda instrument during the Iberian dictatorships (Franco and Salazar). In this study, the author analyzed Spain’s representation and its relationship with Portugal. She highlighted the main propaganda slogan that surrounded the newscasts at the time: friendship, fraternity, and peninsular solidarity. Moreover, the study concluded that the arrival of democracy and the two countries opening to other nations symbolized the end of the broadcasted slogan, as well as the peninsular propagandistic indoctrination.
