O Barranquenho como Língua de Contacto no Contexto Românico [The Barranquenho as a Contact Language in the Romanesque Context], by Maria Filomena Gonçalves and María Victoria Navas, recently published, includes a chapter entitled “We are Our Languages - Diversities and Identities”, by CIAC researcher Manuel Célio Conceição. This publication brings together a set of texts by personalities and entities that, from a scientific and political point of view, have dealt with the language, history, geography, literature, folklore and anthropology of Noudar, Barrancos and its people.
The Barranquenho, spoken in Barrancos, is the result of contact between southern portuguese (alentejano) and the strong traces of southern Spanish varieties (andalusian and extremaduran).
In 2017, the I International Congress “O Barranquenho: Bridge between Languages and Cultures. Past, Present and Future” brought together experts and researchers in languages/variety, to promote the state of knowledge around Barranquenho and debate its sociolinguistic characterization, with view to its valorization. This congress, in which the researcher Manuel Célio Conceição participated, served as a vehicle for enhancing linguistic policy measures, including the classification of Barranquenho as a National Heritage.
