RUI SANCHES IS THE NEXT GUEST SPEAKER OF THE VISUAL ARTS CYCLE
On 15 March 2023, at 16h00 pm, CIAC and the University of Algarve promote a lecture with professor Rui Sanches. The session is part of the Visual Arts Cycle and takes place at Amphitheater 0.3 of the Pedagogical Complex – Campus Penha. Admission is free of charge.
Rui Sanches studied at Ar.Co – Center for Art and Visual Communication, holds a BA from Goldsmiths’ College (London, 1980), an MFA from Yale University (New Haven, 1982), and a PhD from the University of Algarve (2017), where he is currently a Visiting Professor. In 1984, he exhibited his work for the first time at the Moderna Art Gallery of the SNBA and at the Diferença Gallery in Lisbon. Since then, he has held more than forty solo exhibitions, of which stand out “Rui Sanches. Restrospective”, in CAM da f. C. Gulbenkian (2001); the exhibition “MUSEUM”, at the National Museum of Ancient Art (2008); and “Espelho/Mirror”, at the Museu Coleção Berardo e Torreão Nascente da Cordoaria Nacional (2019).
He participated in dozens of group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. His work is represented in the main Portuguese public collections and in several foreign collections, namely: Gulbenkian Museum; Serralves Museum; Museum Van Hedendaagse Kunst Antwerp; Extremadura and Ibero-American Museum of Contemporary Art, Badajoz; EDP Foundation; Luso – American Foundation for development; Caixa Geral de Depósitos collection; Mudas-Museum of Contemporary Art of Madeira; Leal Rios Foundation; Berardo collection and António Cachola collection. He has numerous works in public spaces, namely the “Colonnade” in the Assembly of the Republic; the monument to Maria José Nogueira Pinto in Lisbon; and sculptures in Santo Tirso, Alcobendas (Spain), São Pedro do Sul and the University of Algarve. In 2008, he was awarded the AICA-Ministry of Culture Award.
