VISUAL ARTS CYCLE

BRUNO CARACOL AND PAVEL TAVARES ARE THE NEXT GUEST SPEAKERS OF THE VISUAL ARTS CYCLE

On 10 May 2023, at 16h00, CIAC and the University of Algarve promote the lecture Submerging futures: the collective speculation of the Waterworld project, with set designer Bruno Caracol and filmmaker Pavel Tavares. The session is part of the Visual Arts Cycle and takes place at Amphitheater 0.6 of the Pedagogical Complex – Campus Penha. Admission is free of charge.

Waterworld is a project that addresses the theme of rising sea waters due to climate change (particularly in Ria Formosa) from the speculative tools of science fiction: designing fictional worlds; observing the tensions and paths that these fiction stories bring about in their encounter with the environment; and collectively building precarious, incomplete narratives that express themselves as multimedia installations.

Bruno Caracol studied Fine Arts at FBAUL. He has spent the last few years working with resonating objects, fictional futures and the relationship with the non-human world. In 2017, she finished his master’s degree in Communication Sciences at FCSH-NOVA, on the topic of the modern construction of the idea of “wild nature”. He has collaborated with A Collective since 2018 as a set designer ; exhibited his work at Centro Cultural São Paulo (Brazil), Rampa (Porto), festival Materiais Diversos (Minde) and Festival A_salto (Elvas). He did artist residences at Lugar a Dudas, in Cali and at Can Serrat, in Barcelona; and collaborated with the Capacete residence, in Rio de Janeiro. He is also a set designer, cook, and blacksmith.

Pavel Tavares is a Brazilian filmmaker and audiovisual artist, known for his work in experimental documentaries and site-specific audiovisual installations, having won several awards and distinctions. He studied image and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and holds a postgraduate degree in Cinema from the Torcuato Di Tella University (UTDT). He worked as archivist and professor of Audiovisual project at UBA, where he taught documentary and Latin American Cinema. Internationally, he has produced works in several countries, continents, and institutions. Some of his documentaries are Jasy Poran (Argentina), Алексндр (Russia), 小寨 (China), Tarkovsky Napes (video essay), País de Blancos, and the feature film Sea Eye (Argentina).
