MIRIAN TAVARES PARTICIPATES IN THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES
Today (18th June), at 3:00pm, CIAC Coordinator, Mirian Tavares, will be in the online event “It Was Fifty Years Ago Today”: An Academic Tribute to The Beatles – International Conference, to present “Yellow Submarine – an immersion in Pop Art”. Based on the analysis of the film Yellow Submarine (1968), the article is based on its direct relationship with the plastic universe of Pop Art artists, the atmosphere of Swinging London and its legacy to Western culture.
Rooted in Marcel Duchamp’s Dadaism, Pop Art emerged during the 1950s, when some artists turned symbols and media products into themes for their work. At the same time, in the world of music, new groups and singers appeared, whose fan adoration elevates them to the category of pop icons: such was the case with the Beatles, which emerged in 1960, in the midst of the effervescence of the Pop Art universe.
The artists of this movement were influenced by the atmosphere of Swinging London and inspired the visual production of this youth culture, both in fashion and in music, which style left deep marks in the second half of the 20th century. When the film Yellow Submarine is released in 1968, the links between the visuality of Pop Art and the band’s music are evident.
Half a century after the Beatles split (1970) and forty years since the assassination of John Lennon in New York (December 1980), the Liverpool band’s popularity continues to be a global phenomenon, linking generations from different spatial, linguistic, social and cultural boundaries. Promoted by CETAPS (Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies) of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (NOVA FCSH), “It Was Fifty Years Aug Today”: An Academic Tribute to The Beatles – International Conference aims to analyze the influences and the Beatles’ contributions to contemporary pop music and emerging lifestyles in Britain, Europe and the US since the 1950s.
