CIAC PARTICIPATES IN INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM ON LITERATURE AND CINEMA

On 26 and 27 October 2023, CIAC researchers will be present at International Colloquium Literature and Cinema: Comings and Goings. The event is promoted by the University of Aveiro and will take place in the atrium of The Rectory Building, ‘Sala de Atos Académicos’ and Translations Room.

In addition to researcher António Costa Valente, CIAC collaborator Carlos Coelho Costa, directors João Botelho and Eduardo Brito, and also personalities from the academic world, such as Jean Cléder, from the University of Rennes 2, Florence Pelligrini, from the University Bordeaux-Montaigne also take part in the event.

According to the organization, “the study of the relations between cinema and literature has focused, for a long time, on the question of the adaptation of literature to the cinema, a relatively constant practice in the history of the arts and on which adaptation Studies were built. Comparative studies have for decades surpassed the aporia of the notions of Fidelity / betrayal (Bazin, 1959) to the original work, namely under the influence of fruitful dialogues between Literary Studies and Cultural Studies – more particularly visual and intermediate studies.”

The colloquium aims to “prolong the reflection, on these and/or other issues, carried out in recent years to better understand the evolution of the relations between cinema and literature, in an increasingly complex space, where more and more inter-and transmedia Communication Media, supports for artistic devices and dissemination systems coexist and compete.”

On the first day of the event, at 18h30 pm, António Costa Valente moderates João Botelho’s conference, “how to adapt great books to the cinema”. On the 27th, the researcher and film producer teaches a workshop on “Literature and Cinema in Portuguese short film”.

Carlos Coelho Costa takes part in Panel 10, on the 27th, with an approach to the theme ” Teaching and practice of adaptation: the creative path of the short film Na hora errada [At the wrong time]”, with Célia Vieira and Ana Isabel Braga, from the University of Maia (Portugal)
