The article “Languidez de Agosto (1984): A Praia de Cesare Pavese (1945) em Jorge Silva Melo”, by Ana Isabel Soares (University of Algarve/CIAC), Caterina Cucinotta (University Nova de Lisboa/IHC) and Ana Catarina Pereira (University of Beira Interior/LabCom), has just been released in Fotocinema – Revista Científica De Cine Y Fotografía. Based on the works A Praia [The Beach] (by Cesare Pavese, 1941) and Agosto [August] (Jorge Silva Melo, 1991), the article proposes an appreciation of the two works based on the freedom of creative processes.

Filmed in 1987 by Jorge Silva Melo and premiered in 1991, Agosto is an adaptation of the work A Praia (by Cesare Pavese), in Portuguese cinema. The authors’ reflection is based on the joint understanding that Silva Melo’s cinema calls for a renewed aestheticization of the gaze, in which the spectator is invited to privilege the cinematographic form beyond the development and resolution of a narrative.

“Languidez de Agosto (1984): A Praia de Cesare Pavese (1945) em Jorge Silva Melo” looks for traces of authorial expressiveness and intends to analyze the very particular and symbolic reading that the Portuguese filmmaker seems to make of Pavese’s book. In search of their identification, Ana Isabel Soares, Caterina Cucinotta and Ana Catarina Pereira resorted to the testimonies of both authors and to film analysis focused on the treatment of images, sounds, music, materialities, construction of dialogues, appeal to voyeurism and performance of the main actors.

Focusing on the study, analysis, knowledge, history and reflection on cinema and photography, Fotocinema journal intends to contribute to scientific criticism and dialogue based on the cinematographic or photographic image.
