CHAPTER WRITTEN BY RAQUEL PACHECO PUBLISHED IN BOOK ABOUT EDUCATION AND MEDIA

The chapter “‘Cinema and education’: a lighthouse for navigators” [Cinema e Educação’: um farol para navegantes], was recently published in the e-book Grupem 20 anos: memories and learnings about education and media. The article was written by CIAC researcher Raquel Pacheco and co-authored by Mirna Juliana Santos Fonseca. This publication celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Research, Education, and Media Group (Grupem), associated with the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).

In this chapter, Raquel Pacheco and Mirna Juliana Santos Fonseca propose a new discussion about the book Film and education by Rosália Duarte. The book was published one year after Grupem’s foundation and is still often referenced in papers nowadays. In addition, it may serve as a practical guide for educators looking for guidelines for working with cinema in educational contexts.

“’Cinema and education: a lighthouse for navigators” aims to celebrate and develop a new dialogue about this book that has become one of the references in the field of cinema and education in Brazil and Portugal. The authors point out the contemporary themes of the book Cinema and education (feminism, decolonialism, patriarchy, the democratization of culture and cinema, the importance of local and regional culture, among others) and analyze how it can contribute to the process of decolonization of the cinema and audiovisual fields.

Published by Cultural Pepper, Grupem 20 anos: memories and learnings about education and media analytically systematizes theoretical-methodological perspectives that are the basis for research on the relationship of children and young people with the media, and school and teacher’s roles in mediating this relationship.
