PAPER BY SÍLVIA VIEGAS PUBLISHED ON BOOK BY PATRIMÓNIOS – UNESCO CHAIR
“Cultural Heritage(s) and the Right to the City. A View from Lisbon and Luanda”, a paper written by CIAC researcher Sílvia Viegas, was published in the book Other Layers of Cultural Heritage: History and Politics edited by Nuno Lopes, Walter Rossa, Miguel Bandeira Jerónimo. The book is a collective volume written by Patrimónios (Heritages) – UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Dialogue on Heritages of Portuguese Influence and will be launched on 17 March 2023 at the University of Coimbra, as part of the Winter Seminars on Heritages of Portuguese Influence.
The book Other Layers of Cultural Heritage: History and Politics offers a heterogeneous inquiry into the historical contexts and policies that conditioned the emergence and institutionalization of cultural heritage assets, focusing mostly on geographies shaped by Portuguese influence and using as an operational tool the concept of landscape. The topics addressed by each chapter are diverse and crucial: contested heritage; social justice; heritage as performance; industrial colonialism; tourism and heritage; heritage management and preservation; conservation, heritage, and landscape.
The Patrimónios (Heritages) — UNESCO Chair on Intercultural Dialogue on the Heritage of Portuguese Influence — and the homonymous Ph.D. course promote integrated interdisciplinary cooperation and research about the assets that, from the point of view of active cultural heritage (architecture, arts, geography, history, landscape, urbanism), entail convergences in recognizing the values common to the communities where Portuguese forms of presence have existed, or still exist.
